ókwú = word/speech ✦ ike = power
In the Igbo language, my last name has a split meaning; the word ókwú means word or speech and ike means strength in English.
It's a name that carries a weight of truth, storytelling, & power. In naming this creative space after it, I honor one of my ancestral beliefs that language is not just communication, but invocation — a sort of communication / a marriage of the past that helps inform a hopeful future.
